Dr. Brad Miller::

I have Dr. Mark Halpern is with us today. He has a book Coherence Revolution,

Dr. Brad Miller::

which is about finding a flow in your life in order to create a vibrant emotional

Dr. Brad Miller::

and physiological, mental harmony that can free up your life because so many

Dr. Brad Miller::

of our lives have been derailed by circumstances and chaotics times. He has a

Dr. Brad Miller::

great story to tell by his own story of overcoming adversity, and some great

Dr. Brad Miller::

helps to us in his book called Coherence Revolution. Dr. Mark Halpern,

Dr. Brad Miller::

welcome to Beyond Adversity.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Thank you for having me.

Dr. Brad Miller::

It is indeed awesome to have you with us. And you are a Doctor of

Dr. Brad Miller::

Chiropractic and have several other modalities of health, mind, and

Dr. Brad Miller::

body rhythm that you are all about in your life. So you've had a life

Dr. Brad Miller::

time in the health field helping others. And yet, even with all this education,

Dr. Brad Miller::

and all the things that you've done to help others, it seems like you had

Dr. Brad Miller::

some challenges in your life, particularly when the COVID crisis came

Dr. Brad Miller::

crashing down on all of us a year or so ago. Let's hear a little bit about

Dr. Brad Miller::

your story about how you had to face some crisis in your life and then

Dr. Brad Miller::

how that may have led to this book here, Coherence Revolution.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Yeah, sure. Well, my journey really started as a teenager,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I mean, I think but before I was a teen, my life was fairly, I was just good.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

There was nothing, I had no complaints. Everything seemed to be going

Dr. Mark Halpern::

in a good direction. I was very happy child. But I would say as as most

Dr. Mark Halpern::

teenagers do, when you hit 12, 13, 14, grade seven, grade eight, I just

Dr. Mark Halpern::

started developing insecurities and you know, social insecurities.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And I think that the way I started to think I started to repeat these

Dr. Mark Halpern::

patterns over and over and over again. And by the time I was 15,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

and 16 years old, I had already practiced these negative thought

Dr. Mark Halpern::

patterns, so many times that I had already created a pattern of

Dr. Mark Halpern::

anxiety. And so I've really been experiencing anxiety, since we're

Dr. Mark Halpern::

at the age of 14, or 15. It was so bad over my teens in my 20s and

Dr. Mark Halpern::

my 30s, that it was really ever encompassing. And so I set out on a

Dr. Mark Halpern::

journey to get rid of it. And I always had this vision that I would

Dr. Mark Halpern::

find the answer. I would find the thing. I would find the person.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I would find the technique. Something that would finally solve it,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

get rid of it, I move past it, and then just kind of go on living my

Dr. Mark Halpern::

life without anxiety. But that's sort of not the way it worked. I

Dr. Mark Halpern::

mean, I probably tried every therapist and energy healer, Western-based

Dr. Mark Halpern::

approach and different talk therapies. Really, you name it, I've tried it all.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

To some degree of success on and off, but nothing that was really permanent.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

It was, you know, talk therapy was good, but it was more of a catharsis, I

Dr. Mark Halpern::

would get it out. And I really realized that I wasn't just going to talk myself

Dr. Mark Halpern::

out of my stress issues out of anxiety. And so over the years, I just tried

Dr. Mark Halpern::

everything in anything. And I would say that I kind of came up with a

Dr. Mark Halpern::

toolbox of things that would help me. Over the last five years, especially,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you know, I put all of that together. However, when COVID hit back in

Dr. Mark Halpern::

March of 2020, I remember we had just finished a renovation of our clinic.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

There's three chiropractors that I work with, or two others other than myself.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

We've done a renewal of our clinic snd I remember it was March 15, we

Dr. Mark Halpern::

were said, Okay, let's, we're going we're going to open the clinic after the

Dr. Mark Halpern::

renovation. We went in and we were locked down by the government and

Dr. Mark Halpern::

the government said go home, we don't know when you're coming back,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

but all businesses have to shut. So I went home, like most people and

Dr. Mark Halpern::

knowing my background of how I dealt with anxiety and how my triggers

Dr. Mark Halpern::

worked, I knew that it wasn't going to work well for me to just sit there

Dr. Mark Halpern::

for the next however long and wait for my demise, so to speak. I was

Dr. Mark Halpern::

looking around and seeing everybody panicking, and I felt this is not

Dr. Mark Halpern::

something I want to indulge in. So I started writing and I just treated

Dr. Mark Halpern::

it like a job in the morning. I'd get up, I'd write and I'd have lunch.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I come back in the afternoon and I'd write and over about a two or

Dr. Mark Halpern::

three month period while we were locked down, I wrote the book

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Coherence Revolution. And then over the next several months, I put

Dr. Mark Halpern::

together the six week online course which really follows the book

Dr. Mark Halpern::

except that it dives deeper in and gives you time to practice and

Dr. Mark Halpern::

learn how to do some of these techniques. But what it did was allow

Dr. Mark Halpern::

me to essentially go through everything I had ever done. Every

Dr. Mark Halpern::

protocol, every technique, every person I reviewed everything I read

Dr. Mark Halpern::

books, I read notes, I you know, email people, and what I ended up

Dr. Mark Halpern::

doing was just working thro ugh and figuring out exactly what did

Dr. Mark Halpern::

work for me what didn't work for me and put together my own

Dr. Mark Halpern::

personal life plan. And, you know, I tell people to live by a process

Dr. Mark Halpern::

mindset rather than a destination mindset. And so what I did was

Dr. Mark Halpern::

create my process. And so now, when I wake up every day, regardless

Dr. Mark Halpern::

from if I have a trigger that causes anxiety or not, I follow the process

Dr. Mark Halpern::

that I've set up. And it helps keep me into the state of coherence,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

which is a state of balance, a state of rhythm. I have means I have

Dr. Mark Halpern::

lots of tools in my toolbox, so to speak, to help change my emotional

Dr. Mark Halpern::

state now. So that's really why I'm doing this, this promotional tours,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I believe that finally, I'm in a place that I can use my experience

Dr. Mark Halpern::

and safe people that are suffering with anxiety and suffering

Dr. Mark Halpern::

with stress and suffer with overwhelm. You know, I feel like now,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

there are answers, and there's ways for people to live a completely

Dr. Mark Halpern::

different life and transform the way they've been living.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And I think that I can I can help,

Dr. Brad Miller::

Yes, well, there's some really interesting and dynamic processes

Dr. Brad Miller::

that you explore in your book and what you're describing now.

Dr. Brad Miller::

And just to be clear, during this time, you normally you've developed

Dr. Brad Miller::

your clinic and so on. You would normally have been seeing patients

Dr. Brad Miller::

or doing whatever you do as a chiropractor, and none of that was

Dr. Brad Miller::

happening. So you had forced upon you this sabbatical, as it were,

Dr. Brad Miller::

if you want to talk kind of an academic terms that you chose to do

Dr. Brad Miller::

something with. And what I'm going with you with you here, Mark,

Dr. Brad Miller::

is that a lot of people when the COVID hit, or when some crisis hits,

Dr. Brad Miller::

instead of taking action, they shut it down.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

They freeze.

Dr. Brad Miller::

They freeze, they go into either a panic mode, or kind of a stoic mode

Dr. Brad Miller::

or, you know, they collapse within themselves. And we like to be about,

Dr. Brad Miller::

here's how you can do something about that. So you mentioned two

Dr. Brad Miller::

or three things that I'm interested in the actions that you took, and

Dr. Brad Miller::

let's break them down just a little bit. First of all, you read and you

Dr. Brad Miller::

studied, and you wrote, so tell me a little bit about some of what

Dr. Brad Miller::

you did with that, What did you read? When you were writing, what

Dr. Brad Miller::

was this process about? I'm interested in the actions were there

Dr. Brad Miller::

physical actions that you took to break this pattern that you were

Dr. Brad Miller::

in? That could have been?

Dr. Mark Halpern::

The first thing I did was, I went back and I started to read the

Dr. Mark Halpern::

people that inspired me, the people that I knew it had a big

Dr. Mark Halpern::

effect on me and some of the are: Dr. Bruce Lipton, who wrote a

Dr. Mark Halpern::

book called The Biology of Belief. Dr. Dispenza, Joe Dispenza, who

Dr. Mark Halpern::

wrote a whole bunch of books about the quantum field and

Dr. Mark Halpern::

meditation and how the brain functions, HeartMath books, which

Dr. Mark Halpern::

is about the way we breathe, and the way we use our emotional

Dr. Mark Halpern::

response. And what I did, I read. When I read through a book,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I always put a fold over on pages that have impact on me. And

Dr. Mark Halpern::

then the intention is to go back and read that page again. But

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I've got a library full of books that I never went back and reread

Dr. Mark Halpern::

any of them. So this time, I just went to all the books and went

Dr. Mark Halpern::

to all those little folded over pages with the impactful things.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And I just read all the impactful things. And, you know, I didn't

Dr. Mark Halpern::

know what my book was going to be, I just started writing my story.

Dr. Brad Miller::

It's just, it wasn't even necessary, but unintentional book,

Dr. Brad Miller::

in the sense, you helped me out here. We live in a digital book

Dr. Brad Miller::

in terms of, hey, I'm a year from now I'm gonna has this book

Dr. Brad Miller::

I'm gonna publish. It may have been more of a cathartic thing

Dr. Brad Miller::

for you to have something to do with your time to relieve

Dr. Brad Miller::

your stresses. Is there anything-

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I knew that I could help people, and I knew that my story

Dr. Mark Halpern::

could help people. But I didn't know in what capacity exactly.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And I knew I was certified in a technique called Heart Math.

Dr. Brad Miller::

Okay.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And, you know, I'm sure we can talk a little bit about facts

Dr. Mark Halpern::

has to do with the heart and coherence. But I learned how

Dr. Mark Halpern::

to teach that. And so right away, I knew if the worst thing

Dr. Mark Halpern::

happened that I could never go back and adjust someone,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

never see people in person. I knew that I could teach HeartMath online,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I knew that I could help people in that way, and to deal with all

Dr. Mark Halpern::

the stress that was happening. But I knew that, to do that, all

Dr. Mark Halpern::

of the other things that come with it, whether it's create a

Dr. Mark Halpern::

website, whether it's have educational materials, all of these things,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

and I thought I'm not just gonna go online and teach Heart Math,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I want to give people an experience where they're learning more,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

and they're being able to set up their life in a certain way.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And since I know that I had done that for myself over the

Dr. Mark Halpern::

last decade or so, I wasn't exactly sure if it was going to be

Dr. Mark Halpern::

a book if it was going to be just a guide. I wasn't sure but

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I knew that I just wanted to start writing because I didn't

Dr. Mark Halpern::

want to get bogged down in the process. I didn't want to

Dr. Mark Halpern::

get bogged down and stuck at the starting line, so to speak.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

So I literally just started writing from the day I was born.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

This is my story. This is how my life unfolded. And these are

Dr. Mark Halpern::

all the things that I've done to help myself and then these

Dr. Mark Halpern::

are all the things I suggest other people do. And I just kept

Dr. Mark Halpern::

writing. And eventually I realized, oh, wow, this actually

Dr. Mark Halpern::

makes the front, middle and end sections of a book and I

Dr. Mark Halpern::

can divide this out and I would say after about a month or so

Dr. Mark Halpern::

of writing I realized I had book. And so then, there was a bit

Dr. Mark Halpern::

of fortuitous luck and circumstance with Coherence Revolution.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I had gone online to better my skills at teaching Heart Math.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And so I saw a man online and he was he was offering to teach

Dr. Mark Halpern::

people even if they were already certified, how to do Heart Math.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

So I thought, why not learn from somebody who's been there before.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And so I took his course. And as I was doing the first three, four weeks,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I really resonated with him. And I decided to have a phone call with him.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And I phoned him. And it turns out his name was Bruce Cryer. And he

Dr. Mark Halpern::

used to be the ex-CEO of HeartMath. But he had left the job for some

Dr. Mark Halpern::

health reasons. And he wanted to kind of come back. And so all of a

Dr. Mark Halpern::

sudden, we really resonated, I said, Okay, how would you like to come

Dr. Mark Halpern::

on board. And so he came on board as my partner on Coherence

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Revolution. And so then I started feeling well, there's a bit of momentum

Dr. Mark Halpern::

here, I now have someone from a company that I've been doing, they're

Dr. Mark Halpern::

using their products and reading their books for last decade or so.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I now the ex-CEO of this company is now on board as my partner.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

So I feel like now we're really going somewhere.

Dr. Brad Miller::

And it gives you a little fortuitous sense of an aha moment that

Dr. Brad Miller::

there's some resonance

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you got it

Dr. Brad Miller::

came into play here. And that's probably one I want to talk

Dr. Brad Miller::

to you about here for just a second here is, because coherence

Dr. Brad Miller::

I've looked up the definition, the Wikipedia definition of it. and

Dr. Brad Miller::

I think I got a handle on what I think you're after. But I'm interested,

Dr. Brad Miller::

you know, you've mentioned here about heart mind mapping.

Dr. Brad Miller::

And we know a part of what you're about is heart, spirit, mind,

Dr. Brad Miller::

and body, all that connectivity, but tell us what you mean by

Dr. Brad Miller::

coherence, particularly as you start to get into some of this

Dr. Brad Miller::

esoteric area, that has to do with how we are becoming the

Dr. Brad Miller::

flow part of things.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

So coherence, to me is balance, coherence is being in sync.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

But it can be in many different forms. So for instance, an athlete.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

If an athlete says to I was in the zone. For that competition, I was

Dr. Mark Halpern::

in the zone. What they're telling you is that all their cells, everything

Dr. Mark Halpern::

was firing together. Their decision making was great. Their physical

Dr. Mark Halpern::

body was in tune with their emotional state, and they were in their

Dr. Mark Halpern::

optimal state, and they could perform at their best. You notice

Dr. Mark Halpern::

when you walk into a room and there's a big party, there's someone

Dr. Mark Halpern::

from across the room, that you just feel their energy, you wander

Dr. Mark Halpern::

over and talk to them, you miss them. That's a resonance that's

Dr. Mark Halpern::

a coherence between the two of you. And likely, there's also

Dr. Mark Halpern::

people that are kind of pushing you away, because you feel

Dr. Mark Halpern::

their energy isn't working with you. And so there's a value in

Dr. Mark Halpern::

coherence and incoherence really. But when I talk about

Dr. Mark Halpern::

physiological coherence, I'm talking about the way the brain

Dr. Mark Halpern::

and the heart rhythm, get in sync with each other. And so the

Dr. Mark Halpern::

hearts rhythm is the strongest rhythm of the body, it's about 40

Dr. Mark Halpern::

times stronger electrically than the brains. And so if you can get

Dr. Mark Halpern::

your heart rhythm into a coherent rhythm, which actually looks

Dr. Mark Halpern::

like a sine wave. When you breathe in and breathe out, it kind

Dr. Mark Halpern::

of goes into this nice sine wave. And when you get into that

Dr. Mark Halpern::

physiological state, where you're increasing the length of your

Dr. Mark Halpern::

breath, and you're really allowing your heart to get into a nice

Dr. Mark Halpern::

rhythm, you start to stimulate the centers of the brain that have

Dr. Mark Halpern::

to do with decision making: pain, sleep, you know, your immune

Dr. Mark Halpern::

system. And so all of a sudden, you're starting to entrain your

Dr. Mark Halpern::

brain to your heart rhythm, and then your digestive rhythm

Dr. Mark Halpern::

comes along, and then your breathing rhythm comes along.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And the cells of your body are literally all functioning, healing,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

and replicating as they should. And so this state of physiological

Dr. Mark Halpern::

coherence is the most resilient state. It's the state where you

Dr. Mark Halpern::

fight off disease, where you make better decisions, where you

Dr. Mark Halpern::

sleep better, where you heal at your best. And so this is a state

Dr. Mark Halpern::

that you want to be in as often as you possibly can.

Dr. Brad Miller::

So stay that helps us to respond to the anxiety inducing events

Dr. Brad Miller::

such as COVID, or other life crises that come along, which invariably

Dr. Brad Miller::

do. So let's go look just a little bit deeper on this because I'm a real

Dr. Brad Miller::

believer that in order to face adverse life conditions, we do have to

Dr. Brad Miller::

make this connection that is beyond self, beyond our self. And I know

Dr. Brad Miller::

you have a couple, a chapter two in your book about, basically about

Dr. Brad Miller::

meditation and spirituality and about connecting to something greater

Dr. Brad Miller::

than yourself. And so tell us a bit about that about how this connectivity,

Dr. Brad Miller::

bit spiritual meditation, religion, anything else comes into play for her

Dr. Brad Miller::

for someone to respond to adversity in their life and to get into flow

Dr. Brad Miller::

as you talk about

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Yeah. Well, you know, you know, it's interesting, from a spiritual

Dr. Mark Halpern::

level and for just a philosophical let's say, I've always felt connected

Dr. Mark Halpern::

to the world around me, you know, universal principles that you know,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

the universe has your back you hear you have heard see heard that

Dr. Mark Halpern::

before. But for me, it was always very much just a concept. But around

Dr. Mark Halpern::

2016, when me my wife started to go to see Dr. Joe Dispenza, do his

Dr. Mark Halpern::

workshops, he does a specific type of meditation, where he's guiding

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you through different energy centers, and he's guiding you through

Dr. Mark Halpern::

how you can move energy through your body. And when you're

Dr. Mark Halpern::

doing this in a room with 1000 people, you start to feel the difference.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And I have seen things in that room, from people having out of body

Dr. Mark Halpern::

experiences, and literally the universe, you know, energy coming through

Dr. Mark Halpern::

a person. And I've seen it and witnessed it enough times, that you feel

Dr. Mark Halpern::

connected to everybody in that room at a higher level, at a deeper level.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And then what Dr. Dispenza did is he brought those HeartMath people.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

The people from that company, they did research on people's brains,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

as we're in that state. So you have these electrodes on your head, and

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you'd be in meditation to be measuring the changes that are occurring.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And they would measure your heart rate variability. And they did tests like,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you'd be with three other people that were practicing heart coherence. And

Dr. Mark Halpern::

if their heart went into coherence, the fourth person in the experimenter

Dr. Mark Halpern::

was doing nothing, their heart went into coherence, and you start to see

Dr. Mark Halpern::

from a scientific standpoint, that the emotions that you feel are affecting

Dr. Mark Halpern::

the person next to and so now you start to go, wow, I can see this scientifically,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I've always thought about it spiritually. And so once the spiritual meets the

Dr. Mark Halpern::

science, I mean, now you've got power, you know, from my perspective, and

Dr. Mark Halpern::

from what I've seen going to the workshop to Dr. Joe and some other people,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you know, I've always thought that maybe it's a lot simpler than we thought.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Because every religion on Earth, talks about love. Every planet on Earth

Dr. Mark Halpern::

talks every religion or talks about how love can heal. And imagine if that

Dr. Mark Halpern::

was the case, if just feeling these emotions of love, can actually change the

Dr. Mark Halpern::

planet. And HeartMath had these researchers at different poles on around

Dr. Mark Halpern::

the Earth, and they're measuring the electromagnetic field. And this

Dr. Mark Halpern::

research actually started on September 11, 2001, when the planes hit

Dr. Mark Halpern::

the building. What they noticed during that time is that there was a

Dr. Mark Halpern::

blip in the Earth's electromagnetic field at the same frequency as

Dr. Mark Halpern::

the human heart. And so what they started to do research on was,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Wow, there was enough people looking at their TV and their screens

Dr. Mark Halpern::

with the feeling of grief that it actually changed the planet's

Dr. Mark Halpern::

electromagnetic field. So now there's actually a - it's called the

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Global Coherence Initiative, where they're trying to get enough

Dr. Mark Halpern::

people to meditate with the feeling of love at one time, so that you

Dr. Mark Halpern::

can actually change the Earth's electromagnetic field and perhaps

Dr. Mark Halpern::

change the ozones to heal the oceans, heal the planet. And so for me,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

it's been very inspiring that when you work on physiological coherence,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you're working on your own overwhelm your own stress, you're

Dr. Mark Halpern::

optimizing your own body. You're also working with the people

Dr. Mark Halpern::

next to you. And then you're also affecting the earth. And so it's

Dr. Mark Halpern::

really a three stage process of connectivity to those around you.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Well, that's what's inspired me,

Dr. Brad Miller::

I'm really interested, fascinated with what you're talking about here,

Dr. Brad Miller::

Mark, because it seems to medicate me a positive sense of contagion,

Dr. Brad Miller::

you know, like contagion that is healthy and vibrant and alive, as

Dr. Brad Miller::

opposed to you know, we talked a little bit about the COVID crisis.

Dr. Brad Miller::

And we know, you know, how that's an actual viral situation. And we

Dr. Brad Miller::

know that in certain situations in politics and war and other things, you

Dr. Brad Miller::

can have hatred and nasty stuff that can be spread to one to another.

Dr. Brad Miller::

And what you're sharing here is his vibrance, the vibration that can

Dr. Brad Miller::

be shared, but from one to another, but it really starts with individuals

Dr. Brad Miller::

doesn't it, doesn't not. Making their decision to transform, you know,

Dr. Brad Miller::

because if I've give you out my own experience, you know, I've spent

Dr. Brad Miller::

40 years as a pastor and so I've spent a lot of time with people in

Dr. Brad Miller::

hospitals and end of life situations and major health matters and

Dr. Brad Miller::

spiritual matters and relationship matters. And that approach, that

Dr. Brad Miller::

attitude towards a surgery, or to anything else makes a huge

Dr. Brad Miller::

difference. And so you can call it prayer, you can call it spiritual life

Dr. Brad Miller::

and call it meditation. Or you can call it deep breathing all of these

Dr. Brad Miller::

things when people have some sort of a centered in their life. It makes

Dr. Brad Miller::

a big difference. And one of the thought about it is, I come from a music

Dr. Brad Miller::

background United taught a little bit about our rock'n'roll backgrounds

Dr. Brad Miller::

a little bit as fans, but I'm an old as disc jockey, but I know there's some

Dr. Brad Miller::

research out there that shows certain types of music helps people even

Dr. Brad Miller::

in groups, their heartbeats and other thoughts are the fizzy physiological

Dr. Brad Miller::

aspects to come into alignment or in harmony. That's part of what we're

Dr. Brad Miller::

talking about here. Do you think there's anything to all that all this

Dr. Brad Miller::

alignment this world alignment of flow?

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Well, you know, it's funny. In my course, what I go through is each of the

Dr. Mark Halpern::

senses. We go through touch, we go through taste, we go through smell,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

we go through visual, we go through auditory. And one of the exercises I

Dr. Mark Halpern::

do in the course, I think it's a week three or four, we wrap it up the senses,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

by doing fingerpainting. In during the fingerpainting, I have 15 different

Dr. Mark Halpern::

music tracks. From Rock and Roll to country to jazz to to these drummers

Dr. Mark Halpern::

from Japan, there's 15 different tracks. And the idea is to find your flow.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And as I put groups through this exercise, the responses were actually

Dr. Mark Halpern::

really fascinating because people's emotions changed and their drawings

Dr. Mark Halpern::

in the way they used color change drastically based upon the music that

Dr. Mark Halpern::

they were listening to, and the different sounds that they were hearing.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And people reporting, you know, they feel up, they feel down, they

Dr. Mark Halpern::

feel irritated, all within this half hour of changing the music and the

Dr. Mark Halpern::

color. So everything has a vibration to it, whether it's a color, whether

Dr. Mark Halpern::

it's an object, everything vibrates. And so when you are in sync with that

Dr. Mark Halpern::

vibration, you can use it to your advantage, if it's if it's vibrating against

Dr. Mark Halpern::

something, something that turns you away, well, then you want to avoid it,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

because it's it's depleting in nature. And that's one of the other things that

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I talk about is finding out the things that renew you versus the things that

Dr. Mark Halpern::

deplete you. And so as you go through the self inquiry around sounds, or

Dr. Mark Halpern::

tastes, or whatever it is, you want to obviously if you find some type of

Dr. Mark Halpern::

sound that stimulates a positive emotional response, you can then use that.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

So the next time you're in a down state, you can play that music or listen

Dr. Mark Halpern::

to that sound to help change your emotional state. And that's the whole

Dr. Mark Halpern::

purpose of what the coherence revolution is all about is figuring out what

Dr. Mark Halpern::

sounds do resonate with you and which sounds don't so that you can use

Dr. Mark Halpern::

more of the ones that do and get rid of the ones that don't. And it's really

Dr. Mark Halpern::

all about self-knowledge.

Dr. Brad Miller::

And that taking that self knowledge and applying it is where

Dr. Brad Miller::

I want to go next with you for a second year mark. And because

Dr. Brad Miller::

they you know, if it's one thing to learn, we would talk about our

Dr. Brad Miller::

Barrows. One thing to learn is when you need to read, it's even

Dr. Brad Miller::

though you want to write about it, but how do you apply it to your

Dr. Brad Miller::

life. And I think it goes to the cognitive part of this, how you implement

Dr. Brad Miller::

it. And I'm talking here on out now about habits or practices or rituals

Dr. Brad Miller::

or new ways of doing things or whatever it is new hobbies, for instance.

Dr. Brad Miller::

Tell us a bit about how you did this from yourself and what you teach

Dr. Brad Miller::

here for people to break, whatever, you know, there's patterns people

Dr. Brad Miller::

go into, and they start to spiral down into depression and things like that.

Dr. Brad Miller::

But what are some of the habits that people can pick up on to play

Dr. Brad Miller::

in his cognitive piece of what you teach here.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

So one of the most helpful things that I ever did for myself was part

Dr. Mark Halpern::

one of this exercise, which is I created a DTS daily time schedule.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And what that means is I outlined what I would do from the time

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I woke up to the time I went to bed, every everything is in there,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

and I teach you to do it in a certain way. Because it left to your

Dr. Mark Halpern::

own devices. People do all the things that take up, you know,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

laundry, groceries, all the things that are just the stuff you're

Dr. Mark Halpern::

supposed to fit in they they're too busy doing that they

Dr. Mark Halpern::

don't get the all their stuff done

Dr. Brad Miller::

Urgent but not important, you know?

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Yes. So you put in everything you know, you put in your

Dr. Mark Halpern::

work schedule, your sleep schedule, you put in your exercise,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you put everything in your schedule, from whether you want

Dr. Mark Halpern::

social time, whether you want music, whether you want to go

Dr. Mark Halpern::

out to a movie, you put these in your daily schedule. So you

Dr. Mark Halpern::

should come up with a document that looks like Monday

Dr. Mark Halpern::

through Friday, this is the way I live my life. But then what

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you want to do on top of that is figure out what emotions you

Dr. Mark Halpern::

want to feel at what times of the day. And so you can start to

Dr. Mark Halpern::

say when I wake up this is the emotion I want to feel.

Dr. Brad Miller::

all about your emotions. I love that keep keep going

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Very impressive. because there's a reason for it. You know,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

as a sidebar, the reason I'm intentional about the emotions I

Dr. Mark Halpern::

feel now is because I was so unintentional for 30 years about

Dr. Mark Halpern::

the mind racing that caused the anxiety that produce chemicals

Dr. Mark Halpern::

that created anxiety, and I wasn't intentional. I just let the

Dr. Mark Halpern::

thought process go because

Dr. Brad Miller::

Given a voice, something's gonna come in there some outdoor

Dr. Brad Miller::

outside stimulus is gonna come in there and bombard and try

Dr. Brad Miller::

and there's plenty of that isn't there? Outdoor? That's right.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And so if you become intentional about the emotions that you

Dr. Mark Halpern::

want to feel, and then you do the self inquiry to find out how can

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I do that? If I smell a fragrance of orange in the morning,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

does that wake me up? If I smell some other smell in the afternoon?

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Does that relax me or taste or visual? Whatever it is. And so once you

Dr. Mark Halpern::

have your toolbox about how to change your emotions, and you've

Dr. Mark Halpern::

identified what emotions you want to feel at what time of the day,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you can start to practice the emotions of your dream life. And once

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you start to practice the emotions of your dream life, the dream life

Dr. Mark Halpern::

becomes more familiar to you. And if becomes more familiar to you

Dr. Mark Halpern::

the likelihood of you achieving that dream life becomes much greater

Dr. Mark Halpern::

because now you're already familiar with what it feels like. Right? So

Dr. Mark Halpern::

it's important to identify how you want to feel. And then what are the

Dr. Mark Halpern::

things that you can do to do it. And so I have a very, I have a very big

Dr. Mark Halpern::

toolbox of things that if in any given moment, I'm not feeling the emotion,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I want to feel, how do I get there? And I now know, okay, boom, I'm gonna go.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Sometimes it's putting on a hat, you know, that hat makes me feel great.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Sometimes it's talking to a certain person, sometimes it's listening to music,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

sometimes it's doing Heart Math, which is the breath work that I teach.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

But no matter what it is for you, you have to know what your toolbox has.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And then you can practice. And as long as you're practicing the emotions

Dr. Mark Halpern::

that you want to feel, they're just going to get easier and easier for you.

Dr. Brad Miller::

So if you practice these things, you can in effect,

Dr. Brad Miller::

by that the action switch your state from whatever

Dr. Brad Miller::

you might have been in or might have been influenced by

Dr. Brad Miller::

your stimuli. And to something that you have some control

Dr. Brad Miller::

over or you set yourself in a direction, that's awesome.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

It's one of the smartest statements ever made was fake it till you

Dr. Mark Halpern::

make it, because fake it till you make it is really saying, Live as if you

Dr. Mark Halpern::

are, and if you act as if long enough, you become more and more

Dr. Mark Halpern::

familiar with it, and you start to be able to do it. And so whether

Dr. Mark Halpern::

it's achieving an emotion or achieving a certain goal, or whatever

Dr. Mark Halpern::

it is, acting as if means that you're already behaving as if it is.

Dr. Brad Miller::

The act as if and the fake it 'til you make, I have a term I like to

Dr. Brad Miller::

use for that type of thing is practice, you know, in simply to

Dr. Brad Miller::

practice whatever it is if I want to learn to play guitar, I am just

Dr. Brad Miller::

simply not going to be Jerry Garcia, the first time I pick up a guitar.

Dr. Brad Miller::

I'm going to have to practice you know, hours and hours, and

Dr. Brad Miller::

Gladwell 20,000 hour type of thing, whatever it is, you got to keep

Dr. Brad Miller::

at it, and you're just going to suck at first, but you got to keep at it.

Dr. Brad Miller::

And that's what I think I'm here, you say you're?

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Well, yes, and but most people won't do that with an emotional state.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And you see, if you're let's say you're someone that suffers with anxiety,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

or migraines are overwhelmed. And now you want to practice a

Dr. Mark Halpern::

different anxiety state and you go, I can't feel a positive emotion,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I'm anxious right now. Well, no, the first time, you're probably not

Dr. Mark Halpern::

going to be able to. But the fact is, is a simple thing, like going to

Dr. Mark Halpern::

a mirror, and standing in front of the mirror and smiling. As soon

Dr. Mark Halpern::

as you smile, it releases endorphins in your brain releases chemicals

Dr. Mark Halpern::

that produce happiness. And so if you can, in that state of just being

Dr. Mark Halpern::

miserable, if you can literally just get to a mirror, and smile, and just

Dr. Mark Halpern::

smile a few times, it breaks the pattern. And so again, if you have

Dr. Mark Halpern::

some of these tools, or some of these things that you know work

Dr. Mark Halpern::

for you, you've got to go and do them. And the first time is not

Dr. Mark Halpern::

going to be easy. And the second time will get a little easier.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And then it gets easier and easier. It's like anything, you practice

Dr. Mark Halpern::

your emotional state. So you can become a master of your moment.

Dr. Brad Miller::

Another part of the emotional state is how we, you got really

Dr. Brad Miller::

big believer to send, you got to have your personal decisions,

Dr. Brad Miller::

your quiet time, but whatever it is, you got to do it. You got to

Dr. Brad Miller::

suck it up and do it little by little, but that's willpower. For

Dr. Brad Miller::

instance, you got to be unsatisfied with your prior state in order

Dr. Brad Miller::

to change to the new state. But the emotional piece, I believe,

Dr. Brad Miller::

also has to do with other people or influences how community

Dr. Brad Miller::

comes into play, you got personal practice, and you got

Dr. Brad Miller::

community you got relationships. So let's talk a little bit about

Dr. Brad Miller::

that right now in terms of the power of mentorship or relationships,

Dr. Brad Miller::

our community, friends, family, others, to be encouraging to you or

Dr. Brad Miller::

how your investment in others, those emotional states can be part

Dr. Brad Miller::

of your own process of growth to find flow, let's talk about

Dr. Brad Miller::

relationships in terms of this transformation.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

So for me, there's been what you're talking about sort of affects me

Dr. Mark Halpern::

in two different ways. One, when you are with someone, and you're

Dr. Mark Halpern::

having a conversation, and you're there with them, being in the

Dr. Mark Halpern::

moment, I don't feel a lot of anxiety. And most people when they're

Dr. Mark Halpern::

actually in the moment when they're engaged in something, there is

Dr. Mark Halpern::

no stress. It's when you're thinking about the future, you get anxiety,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you think about the past, you kind of get depressed. But if you're in

Dr. Mark Halpern::

the moment, there isn't very much of that. So when I am with someone

Dr. Mark Halpern::

who I resonate with, and I'm having a good conversation, I'm in that

Dr. Mark Halpern::

moment. But it goes beyond that as well, especially for me as a

Dr. Mark Halpern::

chiropractor, when I enter the room with one of my patients, even

Dr. Mark Halpern::

if I'm anxious beforehand, as soon as I get in there with them. And

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I'm of service to them. And my issue is not where my brain is

Dr. Mark Halpern::

anymore. I'm thinking about how can I help them for the two

Dr. Mark Halpern::

minutes, five minutes or ten minutes that I'm with that patient,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I don't feel anxiety. Because I am with them and I'm engaged

Dr. Mark Halpern::

and I'm in the moment. And so for me using your community,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

it is a reciprocal thing. I mean, my patients have helped me as

Dr. Mark Halpern::

much as I've helped them. Simply because when I'm when with

Dr. Mark Halpern::

them, I'm in the moment and I'm feeling my absolute best. I'm

Dr. Mark Halpern::

feeling inspired. And I know that I'm giving that to them, and

Dr. Mark Halpern::

they're able to walk out feeling that energy. So not only did I

Dr. Mark Halpern::

help myself, but now I've helped them. And so I find, you know,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

when you are around people that aren't, you know, that, that

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you resonate with, obviously, I am also a big proponent of

Dr. Mark Halpern::

avoiding people who you just trigger you all the time, I don't

Dr. Mark Halpern::

care if they're your family, friends, or whoever they are, if they're

Dr. Mark Halpern::

triggering you all the time, you need, you need some respite from

Dr. Mark Halpern::

them, at least so that you're not triggered. But for the most part,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

when I'm around people, and I can be in the moment with them

Dr. Mark Halpern::

the connection that you are able to the given the receive, I believe

Dr. Mark Halpern::

has saved me and my patients have saved me from a whole bunch

Dr. Mark Halpern::

of suffering, because when I'm with them, I'm more about in

Dr. Mark Halpern::

service, as opposed to what's wrong with me.

Dr. Brad Miller::

Let's talk about it in service, then. Because Will you talk about

Dr. Brad Miller::

how you know, we need to avoid the toxic relationships and

Dr. Brad Miller::

have the encouraging relationships. And you've also prior about

Dr. Brad Miller::

mentorships, or reading and other you know, seminars you've

Dr. Brad Miller::

been to, and that type of thing. But now you have come up with

Dr. Brad Miller::

your own book called the Coherence Revolution, you have your

Dr. Brad Miller::

website, and you have your course you know, and various things

Dr. Brad Miller::

you involved with, how was what you're working on now of

Dr. Brad Miller::

service to others? Not everybody's gonna be able to come to

Dr. Brad Miller::

your office to get an adjustment of chiropractic adjustment. But

Dr. Brad Miller::

you have obviously now been motivated to share your thoughts

Dr. Brad Miller::

with with the world says what that's about how you serve others?

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Well, the book really goes into my story, it goes into some concepts

Dr. Mark Halpern::

and some really important concepts about the words we use and

Dr. Mark Halpern::

about the world around us, and about how to use our senses. And I

Dr. Mark Halpern::

enjoyed the process of writing the book. But where I'm really energized

Dr. Mark Halpern::

for is the the course, the reason being is I get to help people in real

Dr. Mark Halpern::

time and teach them the techniques that HeartMath the breathwork

Dr. Mark Halpern::

techniques. And by diving into each week, we'll go over different

Dr. Mark Halpern::

senses, we go over nature, we talk about how to use the world

Dr. Mark Halpern::

around you to create, essentially, by the end of the six weeks,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you want to be able to have your own life plan. And that DTS

Dr. Mark Halpern::

that I was talking about that daily time schedule, that sort of

Dr. Mark Halpern::

the thing that you're going to create for yourself. So at the end

Dr. Mark Halpern::

of the six weeks, you have a game plan, you know what you're

Dr. Mark Halpern::

going to be doing. And so really, it's about over a four to six

Dr. Mark Halpern::

week period, you get to dive into your own life, you get support,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

and you get to look at what music, what tastes, what sounds

Dr. Mark Halpern::

How does nature help me? How can I use my breath? What

Dr. Mark Halpern::

type of therapies? We talk about all the different things that

Dr. Mark Halpern::

help me and some that didn't. And then I'm able to train

Dr. Mark Halpern::

people how to use it for themselves. So a big part of the

Dr. Mark Halpern::

online course is learning the HeartMath breathwork techniques,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

as well as the Zoom breakout room. So for people who have

Dr. Mark Halpern::

done Zoom, you know, breakout rooms are the side rooms where

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you go in. And so what we do is break into different groups.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And we have people practicing different emotional states

Dr. Mark Halpern::

practicing different responses, practicing how they would like

Dr. Mark Halpern::

to respond in certain situations. So the idea is, we don't want to

Dr. Mark Halpern::

just talk about it, this isn't just theory, we want you to start developing

Dr. Mark Halpern::

the ability to practice the life that you want to lead. And so if you're

Dr. Mark Halpern::

feeling overwhelmed, and you're frozen, the idea is to just start getting

Dr. Mark Halpern::

some help to change the way that you're living everyday to be able to

Dr. Mark Halpern::

change the lifestyle that you're living in. So the coherence revolution is

Dr. Mark Halpern::

really, there is no one way of doing it. But the process everybody

Dr. Mark Halpern::

has to go through in the same way, which is taking the time to dive

Dr. Mark Halpern::

into each aspect of their life, and really be honest with themselves

Dr. Mark Halpern::

about what works and what doesn't. So that at the end of the six

Dr. Mark Halpern::

weeks, you have you almost have a manifesto of your own life that

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you can that you will be able to practice and live by.

Dr. Brad Miller::

And they can find that at your website coherencerevolution.com.

Dr. Brad Miller::

And but let's hear now, you've mentioned this about how your

Dr. Brad Miller::

course and your book and the people you've worked with personally,

Dr. Brad Miller::

I'd like to hear a story now about a person or maybe a situation you've

Dr. Brad Miller::

worked with. Were you seeing some of the concepts that you've taught

Dr. Brad Miller::

to come to fruition? Were you seeing an actual life change, have

Dr. Brad Miller::

somebody get towards a state of flow that you talk about?

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Well, you know, it was interesting. I've got a whole bunch of patients

Dr. Mark Halpern::

that I've put through this, this process as well. In the summer there was

Dr. Mark Halpern::

a woman, she went through the process, she was probably a 35 year old

Dr. Mark Halpern::

woman. She's still single, so she was on her own. But she just kept telling

Dr. Mark Halpern::

me that she was overwhelmed. She's not getting anything done. Her life

Dr. Mark Halpern::

is always busy. She doesn't have time for herself. And it's really hard for

Dr. Mark Halpern::

her to move forward in life. She stuck. And so then after she went through

Dr. Mark Halpern::

this process, you know, the first thing I teach people is don't make decisions

Dr. Mark Halpern::

when you're in coherence make a decision when you're coherent. So, first

Dr. Mark Halpern::

of all, as she learned this by At work, her ability to make the decisions

Dr. Mark Halpern::

and not stay stuck changed, you know, she no longer felt stuck.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Because every time she felt that feeling, she would use the breath

Dr. Mark Halpern::

work, she'd get unstuck. And then she'd make the decision that

Dr. Mark Halpern::

she needed to make for the next day or the next decision she

Dr. Mark Halpern::

needed to make. And then she reported back to me a couple

Dr. Mark Halpern::

of weeks later, she had done her daily schedule. She know,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

she made time to schedule time with her family, but she also

Dr. Mark Halpern::

had time to get that part time job she wanted. And she also

Dr. Mark Halpern::

was able to clean out her house. And so she was just really

Dr. Mark Halpern::

excited that she got to get to things she never was able to

Dr. Mark Halpern::

get to. And now this is only maybe four or five days ago, this

Dr. Mark Halpern::

is about three months after her doing the course, she's now

Dr. Mark Halpern::

just said to me, life is not the same, the way that she is able to

Dr. Mark Halpern::

make her decisions. She's not doing it from a place of

Dr. Mark Halpern::

overwhelm anymore. And so she's been able to get a lot

Dr. Mark Halpern::

more done, because when she's not an overwhelmed, there's

Dr. Mark Halpern::

a lot of things that she enjoys. So for her, it was all about

Dr. Mark Halpern::

breaking the cycle of feeling overwhelmed, yes. Right.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Whereas I had I had a guy who was in his late 40s, real a

Dr. Mark Halpern::

personality electrician, you know, not, I wouldn't say he

Dr. Mark Halpern::

lived his life by a heart centered approach. But he was a

Dr. Mark Halpern::

very lovable guy. But he was all business. And he came in

Dr. Mark Halpern::

and he was the least likely person to take my course. But,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you know, I actually asked him I recommended and he said,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

You know what, I'm going to take you up on that. So he took

Dr. Mark Halpern::

the course. And for him, he came in after the first two weeks,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

and he said, You know what the most important thing I've

Dr. Mark Halpern::

learned from your course is how to listen. Because now I'm able

Dr. Mark Halpern::

to listen to my employees, and the ability of us to move forward.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And in our business, we've gotten past some roadblocks, because

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I'm actually listening to what the employees have said. And I think

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I'm gonna go to therapy with my wife, because I think I now

Dr. Mark Halpern::

understand what she's been asking me. And this is a guy that

Dr. Mark Halpern::

never would have considered. So what I'm seeing, I guess, in

Dr. Mark Halpern::

general, is people breaking their pattern of that's not the way

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I am ever heard people say that, Oh, that doesn't work doesn't

Dr. Mark Halpern::

work for me. It's not for me. And whenever someone says,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

oh, that doesn't work for me, I always say, but how is what

Dr. Mark Halpern::

you're currently doing?

Dr. Brad Miller::

How's that working for you?

Dr. Mark Halpern::

Yeah and so what I'm seeing is people breaking their patterns.

Dr. Mark Halpern::

And that's really the most important thing for me, if I can help

Dr. Mark Halpern::

people, break down their old patterns and help create new ones,

Dr. Mark Halpern::

I think I've done my job with them.

Dr. Brad Miller::

And that is absolutely how people break through and get Beyond

Dr. Brad Miller::

Adversities we like to say here and to come on to a better life.

Dr. Brad Miller::

So people want to get a hold of you or connect you to where

Dr. Brad Miller::
